The mission of the Chico State Swine Unit is to educate students and the general public in all aspects of Swine production and welfare.
A division of California State University - Chico, the Chico State Swine Unit maintains approximately 30 purebred Yorkshire and crossbred sows and gilts in their herd. All breeding is performed mainly via artificial insemination (AI), with some natural breeding when necessary. They have one in house boar, born and raised at the CSU Chico - Swine Unit, which is used mainly for heat detection and occasional natural breeding.
On Saturday, January 30, 2010, they will be hosting our Annual Swine Educational Day and Sale. This event includes a variety of educational workshops followed by a project pig sale.
